Call to budding district songbirds

Excerpts from George Handel’s oratorio Messiah, including the famous Hallelujah chorus, will fill the Shepparton Uniting Church this year.

But before the public presentation goes ahead, music director Annie Nichols needs singers.

‘‘I’m encouraging everyone and anyone who enjoys singing and having fun to come and rehearse with us,’’ she said.

‘‘Handel’s Messiah is very uplifting music and we want more people to come join our group who sing on a weekly basis.’’

Ms Nichols said those wishing to join the group did not need to know how to read music or have any previous vocal training.

‘‘It’s a great social opportunity and we will be lucky enough to perform with the only great organ in Greater Shepparton, which is a real treat,’’ she said.

Ms Nichols, who has been playing the organ from about 15, said the Shepparton Uniting Church was privileged to own the only great organ in the region.

‘‘It has a unique sound and this building has fantastic acoustics, so the presentation is not to be missed,’’ she said.

Mrs Nichols said the group was rehearsing at the Baptist church until the weather warms up, then the group move back to the Shepparton Uniting Church.

‘‘Those who also wish to glean free specialist singing training can come to the Baptist church on Thursdays from 1pm to 2pm.’’

The group rehearses Mondays at the Baptist church, on the corner of Longstaff and Wyndham streets, from 7pm to 9pm.
