Developing young CFA leaders

CFA volunteer sustainability worker Terry Johnson encourages young people to get involved in a leadership and development day this weekend.

Shepparton’s young people are encouraged to get involved with a leadership and development day hosted by the CFA this weekend.

Open to people aged between 16 and 35, CFA volunteer sustainability worker Terry Johnson said the day was designed to get more young people into leadership roles within the organisation.

‘‘The CFA’s profile is generally for the 55-year-old male and leadership in our district team is around the 59-year-old male,’’ she said.

‘‘One of our issues is the youth got together at a forum and talked about the things they would like to see within the organisation and one of the things they said they would like to see is a youth forum and networking day and this is how the event was born.’’

Participants will work on developing their leadership skills including active listening, situational leadership and giving and receiving feedback.

‘‘This is all about encouraging them to step forward into leadership positions and giving them a voice,’’ Ms Johnson said.

‘‘While we all talk about youth being our future, they’re also our present.’’

The leadership and development day is open to all members of the public, including non CFA members.

It will take place on Sunday, June 18 from 10am to 3.30pm at the CFA District 22 headquarters at 205 Numurkah Rd, Shepparton.

RSVP is necessary for catering purposes and can be done by phoning Terri Johnson on 58332400.
