INTERNATIONAL DAY OF GIRLS
Supporting young local girls, Shepparton Girl Guides meet once each week where a variety of ages come together in an empowering environment.
Shepparton Girl Guides youth leader Pam Alexander said the group focused on developing young girls’ life skills.
‘‘They learn a vast array of things that they don’t normally learn at school,’’ she said.
‘‘They do things like cooking, sewing, camping and learn things that help with their independence.’’
Youth member Paige Mann, 16, said it was the opportunities Girl Guides provided which had helped her in developing independence, having completed two overseas adventures in the past two years.
Having started guiding at six at Katandra while she was in primary school, Paige continued doing it once starting high school in Shepparton.
‘‘This year I went to Canada and last year I went to Europe,’’ she said.
Paige spent three weeks in Canada taking part in a jam-packed adventurous program, participating in a high ropes course and much more.
‘‘We also did a home stay with some girls and the Canadians threw us a barbecue to meet with other local girls,’’ she said.
While in Europe, Paige travelled to England, France, Switzerland and Italy where they engaged in sightseeing and independent travel.
Fellow member Zoe De Paolo, 14, enjoyed guiding because it helped young girls for the future, joining just 12 months ago.
‘‘I went along for one week and it was really cool so I came back,’’ she said.
Ms Alexander had really noticed the close friendships members formed during their time at Girl Guides.
‘‘They’d be happy to talk for the whole two hours we meet,’’ she said.
But aside from the skills learnt and friendships gained, Ms Alexander said there was one more big difference she noticed in the girls as they went through guides.
‘‘You see the girls come in and they’re a little bit shy and then they just blossom; their confidence really grows,’’ she said.
After just returning from a camp away and school holidays, the Shepparton Girl Guides regular meeting start again tonight.
The juniors (seven to 11) meet on Wednesdays from 5pm to 6.30pm and the youth group (10/11 to 18) meet from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at the Shepparton Girl Guide Hall on the corner of Nixon and Skene Sts, Shepparton.
