The Basham family has sold the Dunkirk Ave Milkbar and Post Office after running it for the past 14 years.

Colin and Sonia Basham closed the doors to their Dunkirk Ave milkbar for the final time last night.

The pair has owned the Dunkirk Milkbar and Post Office for the past 14 years, with a desire for change influencing their decision to sell.

Originally from Melbourne, the couple moved their family to the country after the opportunity arose to run a post office in Shepparton.

More than a decade later, they have watched their three children grow while working beside them in the family business.

No stranger to customer service, their two daughters and son learned to serve customers and handle money from a young age.

‘‘A special part of this experience for us has been watching customers see our children grow up,’’ Mr Basham said.

‘‘We’ve watched their families grow and they have seen ours.’’

A lot has changed for the pair during the past 14 years, with the rise of the internet having significant impact on their business.

Mr Basham said the milkbar previously was a one-stop shop where customers could pay their bills and buy their groceries all under the one roof.

‘‘A lot has changed over the years, particularly the demographic of our customers,’’ Mr Basham said.

‘‘The younger generation now pay bills online and do all their shopping at the supermarket.’’

Despite the changes, Mr Basham said the continual support from customers had had a positive influence on their journey.

With staff that have become part of the family and friendships made to last a lifetime, the Bashams were sad to say goodbye, but looked forward to whatever the future may hold.

‘‘The thing we will miss the most is the customers, and the great banter and laughs that come along with that,’’ Mr Basham said.

‘‘We thank our customers for the years of loyal service and wish them all the best in their future.

‘‘It has been great to share our family with them and to be able to get to know theirs.’’

While the Basham family close this chapter of their life, Daryl and Jenny Hooper are looking forward to stepping in and taking over the milkbar.

With years of experience under their belt running the Shepparton East post office, the pair were excited to offer the same great customer service and friendly atmosphere.

‘‘We are both excited and nervous, but we are up for the challenge,’’ Mrs Hooper said.
