UPTOWN POP-UP NEWS: The News was out and about in Mooroopna yesterday, setting up a pop-up newsroom at Mooroopna Newsagency. Our journalists then wandered the streets to talk to locals.
From humble beginnings selling plants at markets, Michelle Banfield was inspired to share her green thumb and love of plants with the community when she opened Flourish on McLennan just over a year ago.
As winter sets in, she has shared some helpful tips for keeping your garden in tip-top shape.
Michelle’s winter tips:
●It’s time to get pruning: Make sure your rose bushes and fruit trees are cut back.
●The perfect time to tidy up: Keep falling leaves under control by raking them up and using them in your compost.
●Bare root planting: Now is a great time to plant bare-rooted trees, including bare-root roses. They will be able to take full advantage of spring and are cheaper to purchase at this time of year.
●Beware of frost: There is a lot of frost around the Goulburn Valley this time of year which can be detrimental to frost-sensitive plants. Give them protection and some TLC by bringing them under the cover of a verandah or with the use of hessian fabric. This is a better option than plastic.
The Mooroopna resident loves her nursery’s location, saying there is nowhere else she would have preferred to set up shop.
‘‘People come from all over to visit us, and the building really suits us,’’ Michelle said.
‘‘The parking is really easy as well.
‘‘I feel like Mooroopna is becoming a little destination town.’’
