Shepparton’s Bev Doidge was recently crowned ‘Queen’ of the Take Off Weight Naturally (TOWN) club awards in Melbourne, with the highest annual weight loss in Victoria.

A member of the Sherbourne TOWN club, Ms Doidge said she dropped a huge 41.5kg for the year which saw her first claim top weight loss for Division 4 within the local club.

‘‘I was very surprised when I won because I thought I had been caught by the two girls who came second and third,’’ she said.

Attending the statewide presentation in Melbourne, Ms Doidge said she marched in front of all of the 30 clubs to receive recognition.

‘‘(Our group leader) Sue (Trevaskis) had to take me by hand and lead me up the front. I was totally blown away,’’ she said.

Ms Doidge said she had struggled with her weight since she was 21 years old, ballooning out to 140kg at her heaviest.

‘‘When I started at Take Off Weight Naturally for the first time in 2003 in Mooroopna, I lasted for about six years,’’ she said.

‘‘The second time in June, 2016, I came back because I was in trouble with osteoarthritis pain in my joints and struggling to stay focused. I still attend weekly.’’

Ms Doidge credited her supportive TOWN club for motivating her to lose the weight.

‘‘Together we bolster each other’s sagging spirits and talk about things that trip us up,’’ she said.

‘‘It’s not easy to change a lifetime of bad habits.’’

Group leader Sue Trevaskis said the club had about 42 members and would celebrate its 20th birthday next year.

‘‘I owe my win to the members for all their wonderful support along the way as well, and my family, friends, also my best friend who died in his sleep in January,’’ Ms Doidge said.

‘‘I like to think that he is still watching with pride.’’
