Women in Greater Shepparton are being encouraged to get active as part of VicHealth’s inaugural This Girl Can Week that begins today.
The week, which finishes on Friday, aims to encourage more women to get physically active.
Greater Shepparton City Council will provide a range of fun, free or low-cost activities tailored to women and girls who want to get active, but are not sure how to take the first step and Mayor Kim O’Keeffe is encouraging women to get involved.
‘‘This Girl Can Victoria has had real success in building a supportive community of women who encourage each other to get out there and get active,’’ she said.
‘‘Council is proud to work with VicHealth during This Girl Can Week to encourage local women and girls to smash the stereotypes holding them back from getting active and have a go.
‘‘There’ll be a range of fun and inclusive activities at Aquamoves including womens only swimming, free activities in parks and reserves as part of Councils Activities in the Park program and an active womens breakfast in partnership with local community groups and sports clubs that will help women take that first and often daunting step to being active.
‘‘I encourage women and girls to get involved in the local events taking place and show that in Greater Shepparton — this girl definitely can.’’
VicHealth chief executive Jerril Rechter said This Girl Can Week was about empowering everyday women to get active in their community without feeling judged.
‘‘We want all women — no matter how sweaty they get, how red their face is or how good they are — to feel comfortable about getting out there and giving physical activity a go. That’s what This Girl Can is all about,’’ she said.
‘‘We want Greater Shepparton women to know that we get it. Rocking up to a gym class or training session is tough when you don’t know what to expect.
‘‘That’s why the activities during This Girl Can Week will be inclusive, non-judgemental and accessible for women of different ages, body shapes and abilities.’’
