All set for Mother’s Day Classic race

By Tara Whitsed

This year’s Shepparton Mother’s Day Classic will feature a land versus water theme.

Event co-ordinator Kathy Fuller said the Shepparton Canoe Club had come on board, paddling up and down Victoria Park Lake racing the runners for this year’s event.

Ms Fuller encouraged people to don a splash of pink and enter the 8km or 4km walk or run in Shepparton.

‘‘The Shepparton Runners Club are on board as our pacers for the 8km course and Shepparton Canoe Club will paddle 8km up and down the lake racing against our runners,’’ she said.

‘‘It will also be a showcase for those participating in the 4km walk/run around the lake.’’

Ms Fuller said the Fernwood Fitness crew would be in attendance, running a warm-up as well as Goulburn Murray Landcare Network with its Trees for Mum program.

‘‘It has been running since 2002 where we give out free native plants for people to plant in honour of their mum,’’ GM Landcare’s Helen Jeffs said.

Shepparton Canoe Club’s Michelle Wilson said those who were more interested in taking to the water could register at the tent before making their way up to the boat ramp to try canoeing.

‘‘We’ll sort them out with a canoe and a life jacket,’’ she said.

Registrations for the Shepparton Mother’s Day Classic can be made prior to the event online or from 8am on Sunday at Victoria Park Lake. The 8km run will start at 9.30am followed by the other categories at 9.40am.
