‘‘Even if we’re just dancing in the dark’’ was the motto at a Get Mooving event in Shepparton last night.
The event called No Lights No Lycra is a worldwide initiative which aims to get people physically active by dancing freely while wearing whatever their heart desires.
The event was well received by the region earlier in May when the initiative visited Shepparton on the Victorian regional tour.
Healthy Communities team leader Belinda Conna said the council decided to make the initiative a regular event because it gave people an opportunity to get physically active in Winter.
‘‘The initiative really encourages people who may not be interested in gyms another way to become physically active and a good way to boost peoples energy levels, health and wellbeing,’’ Ms Conna said.
There is no teacher, no steps to remember and no technique needed to attend the free event.
Ms Conna said she believed the initiative would continue to be well received within the Shepparton community.
‘‘It’s a bit different and and the concept appeals to people because it gives them freedom and the opportunity to be themselves,’’ she said.
The free event will run on the first Wednesday of every month at the Vault and people will have the opportunity to donate money to a particular charity on the night if they would like to.
Although there is no dress code to attend the event, Ms Conna said they were looking at hosting themed nights.
‘‘We are going to work on different themes such as the 70s, 80s, 90s, but that will be optional,’’ she said.
The event is family friendly and people of all ages are welcome to participate.
‘‘It is a place where you can completely let go and shake out the stresses of the week in a friendly, non-threatening, drug and alcohol free atmosphere.’’
